Domestic violence

I was proud to walk with the community, council, the police force and support groups in the march against domestic violence at Mooloolaba recently, which was part of National Domestic Violence Prevention Day. The statistics show that domestic violence is very much affecting our community and it’s so important we do everything in our power to eliminate it and help those families who are affected. This annual vigil is a really powerful way to bring attention to this issue and encourage people affected by it to come forward.

Airport expansion milestone

The sod has been turned on the Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion Project and I’m pleased to see this project officially underway with the contractor, John Holland Group. Initial work includes start-up activities for the dredging and dunal works. Don’t forget Beach Access 111 will be closed until dredging works are complete at the end of October 2018.

School update

It was great to catch up with Principal Troy Ascott to talk about his future aspirations for the school, as well as the challenges facing a growing and dynamic student population. The school is delivering terrific educational outcomes for its students and I look forward to continuing to work with Troy and his staff in the coming years.

Individual Development Grants

Congratulations to local Coolum surfer Ellia Smith, who received a council grant to assist with her sport earlier this year. Ellia is competing at a state and national level and representing the Sunshine Coast well. You can visit council’s website for details about our Individual Development Grants.
