Talk about punching above your weight! Bli Bli Little Athletics recently hosted the Sun Coast Regional Relays and what a terrific day it was. There were 920 junior athletes and hundreds of cheering parents and coaches, who all put in a great effort on what was a very hot day. There is no doubt that many larger clubs felt this would be too big of a challenge for a club the size of Bli Bli. How wrong were they? This was an outstanding event, superbly organised and managed by the Bli Bli Little Athletics Committee with lots of help from all the participating clubs and many volunteers.
This event required an extension of some facilities for sports such as long jump and shot put, which is great for the club long term as well. Thank you to everyone involved, from participants and families to businesses and residents who showed their support. I had the pleasure of presenting medals to the under 8 athletes and it was wonderful to see the smiles on their faces.
Keeping an eye out
In another important event for our local kids, the Bli Bli Neighbourhood Watch group did a great job of getting students involved during the recent Neighbourhood Watch Week. I attended a school assembly to speak briefly about the importance of keeping an eye out for unruly behaviour in and around public spaces, particularly over the holidays. From my perspective, it is important that everyone in the community does their bit to help our community remain safe and well looked after.
Improving Finnish Park
Council will soon commence an upgrade to Bli Bli's Finland Road. While we are doing work in the area I would like to make some useful improvements to Finnish Park. I recently met with council officers onsite and it seems the park is in need of a refresh, so I am keen to hear your ideas and gain an understanding of how you currently use the park. This park has an important cultural history for the Bli Bli community, so if you have any thoughts on its future I would love to hear from you. Council will also consult further with the community on this unique project.
Meet and greet
Don’t forget that I’m available for a chat at my regular community ‘meet and greets’ at Bli Bli River Markets. I’ll be outside White’s Supa IGA on Tuesday December 6 from 9-11am. I hope to see you there.
It has been another busy and productive year for the Bli Bli community and as we reach the end, my wife Jeanne and I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a wonderful Christmas and New Year. I am very much looking forward to working with you all in 2017.
