Public art for Bli Bli

You may have noticed a new pop of colour near the River Markets. The traffic box on David Low Way was recently painted by local artist EJ Zyla in celebration of the Sunshine Coast’s 50th Anniversary, following a public art process by council. EJ is a freelance artist with a passion for public art and I’m sure you’ll agree she has done a great job with this colourful addition to Bli Bli. Take a look next time you’re at the River Markets.

Kids teaching kids

Council’s Kids in Action event brings schools together to explore local environmental issues in a fantastic format where the students teach each other. Bli Bli State School will participate for the first time this year. They were also the winner of the early bird registration draw and received an iPad prize that I’m sure will come in useful for various activities. I would encourage any schools that haven’t registered to visit council’s website and do so.

New viewing areas at Mt Ninderry

New viewing areas on Mt Ninderry are now complete. I went along to a helicopter lift materials earlier in the construction phase, which was certainly something different to see. If you’ve climbed Mt Ninderry, I’m sure you can appreciate why these platforms and equipment could not be carried up! I encourage you to hike to the top when work is finished for stunning views out to the Blackall Range, north to Lake Weyba and across Mt Coolum to Mooloolaba.

20th anniversary for our Finnish community

A morning tea celebrating 20 years since the opening of Finnish Memorial Park on 6 April 1987 was held recently. I hear it was a roaring success, with 60 people attending include 20 descendants of original Finnish residents celebrating with coffee and cake. The memorial park reflects the strong role that the Finnish people, many of whom were cane farmers, played in establishing Bli Bli.

Meet and greet

Issues raised by the community at my recent ‘meet and greet’ sessions include:

  • a shade sail for the children's playground at Muller Park, which I am hoping to have included in next year’s budget
  • the State Government's response to our request to widen the Bli Bli bridge. I will continue to follow this up with State Member for Nicklin Peter Wellington as this is a State Government  issue
  • bus services connecting Bli Bli to the new hospital, which I am also checking with the State Government on.
