Council adopted the Community Events and Celebrations Strategy in October 2010 at an Ordinary Meeting.

View the strategy:

The strategy outlines council’s role in community events. It is a way for council to assist the Coast in becoming a more event-friendly region.

The strategy is guided by the Events Policy.

The policy guides:

  • the role council plays in the support, partnership and delivery of events
  • any future strategies council develops regarding major events.

This strategy (and Events Policy) will be reviewed in late 2014 – early 2015 and the community will be invited to provide feedback.

Community engagement

In 2010, council ran a community engagement process that included:

  • consultation of over 640 people of which the results were also used to shape the Creative Communities Plan
  • a major youth engagement project, Speak Up Engage, which included 2,500 surveys of youths on the Coast
  • a series of meetings related to community events that occur during the festive season.

The strategy addresses findings from the engagement process to help recognise:

  • benefits identified by the community
  • issues raised by the community
  • council’s goals in dealing with those issues.

Council wanted the heritage and character of the region's communities to be celebrated and protected by:

  • preserving the cultural heritage and history of the region
  • acknowledging the traditional owners of this land
  • encouraging responsible event management to protect the natural environment
  • respecting the local amenity of public open spaces
  • providing access to a variety of cultural venues
  • providing access to a large number of sport and recreation facilities
  • offering market and street performance sites for the community.

The diverse range of public events helps make the Coast an exciting and fun place to live and visit.
