Council is upgrading a number of key intersections on Maud Street and Aerodrome Road in Maroochydore.
These critical upgrades are essential to improve road safety, connectivity and to cater for the future growth of Maroochydore as the key centre for business and commerce on the Sunshine Coast.
Construction on the Maud Street intersections upgrade was completed in May 2017. Construction of the Aerodrome Road intersections upgrade is in progress and scheduled for completion by late 2018 (weather permitting).
The Maroochydore Intersection Upgrades, including the Aerodrome Road Intersection Upgrades, are a joint initiative of Sunshine Coast Council and the Queensland Government.
Changes to traffic conditions
The large scale and long term duration of this project, combined with high traffic volumes and frequent pedestrian and cyclist movements in the area, means that construction work is complex and challenging.
Traffic movements and pedestrian pathways will be regularly adjusted, often at short notice.
The project team is liaising directly with affected businesses and residents to inform them of specific construction activities, timeframes and impacts.
Weather and site conditions can impact on work schedules and are subject to change at any time.
The project involves upgrading the Maud Street intersections at Bungama Street, Allambie Street and Dalby Street, and installing signalised intersections at Bungama and Dalby Streets.
Aerodrome Road works involve upgrading the intersections at Cornmeal Parade, First Avenue and Maud Street and street realignment. A large number of underground services will also be upgraded.
These upgrades will deliver:
- improved traffic connectivity
- improved road safety
- new pedestrian paths and crossings
- a separated cycle facility
- improved public transport connectivity
- improved underground services
- a significant visual improvement to the area with landscaping and streetscape beautification treatments
- space for a future light rail corridor
Importantly, this upgrade accommodates for the future growth of the Maroochydore region.

From May to late 2018 council will upgrade the two major intersections on Aerodrome Road at Maroochydore.
Work will involve upgrading the First Avenue and Maud Street intersections, and constructing a new entrance to Maroochydore's new city centre.
This work is complex and will be challenging given the high traffic volumes and frequent pedestrian and cyclist movements in this area.
Construction will involve a mix of day and night work. Work will be programmed to minimise construction impacts where possible to motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and the local community.
Major drainage and underground services upgrades
From May through to mid 2017, a large number of underground services will be upgraded. This work is extensive and requires detailed planning and coordination with a number of service providers including Unitywater, Telstra, NBN, Optus, TPG and Energex.
A major stormwater upgrade along First Avenue into Cornmeal Parade will be undertaken during May, June and July.
Council will make every effort to minimise impacts to motorists and the local community during construction. However, throughout the construction period there will be:
- changed traffic conditions - reduced speed limits, temporary lane closures, traffic and pedestrian realignments
- changes to on-street parking
- increased heavy vehicle movements
- construction noise
- regular night work
Major construction of the Maud Street intersections are complete including Bungama, Allambie and Dalby Street intersection upgrades. Some minor works remain including:
- activating traffic signals
- installing lighting
- minor bitumen work
- line marking
