As part of the Light Rail feasibility study process, council prepared the document Sunshine Coast Light Rail: Shaping Our Future.
The document has been prepared to provide an overview of the benefits and opportunities that light rail could provide in shaping the future of the Sunshine Coast. The document addresses a number of matters considered in initial feasibility studies and addresses a range of issues relevant to managing future growth on the Sunshine Coast.
During October and November 2014, council undertook community consultation on the Sunshine Coast Light Rail project. The focus of consultation was to outline the project to the community, explaining the potential benefits of light rail, and to gather community feedback on a range of route options in the areas of Maroochydore, Mooloolaba, Kawana and Caloundra.
The consultation was successful with over 700 members of the community choosing to complete the survey. Of those who completed the survey, 87 percent were in favour of council's light rail investigations. This has given council the confidence to move forward with more detailed technical investigations. These investigations will enable council and the state government to make an informed decision on whether light rail is feasible as a transport and city-shaping option for the Sunshine Coast.
Based on the outcomes of the community consultation and the assessments previously undertaken as part of the Route Planning and Impact Assessment Report, council has identified a light rail route corridor from Maroochydore to Caloundra to be the subject of these further investigations. The Caloundra Master Plan includes some detail about how light rail fits into the vision for Caloundra.

Where to from here
The next step in the feasibility study process is to identify a preferred light rail route between Maroochydore and Caloundra. This will involve community consultation.
The results of community feedback will inform remaining feasibility studies and help to determine the preferred light rail route.

During 2013 council completed the initial round of feasibility studies, which were part-funded by the Commonwealth Government. The study focused on the busy coastal area from Maroochydore to Caloundra with the initial staging for the project likely to be between the Maroochydore City Centre and the new Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital at Kawana. Initial studies have provided the framework for route options that will be the subject of community consultation in late 2014.
