Council is planning to refurbish and upgrade the existing skate and BMX park at Alexandra Headland as part of the Alexandra Headland Skate and BMX Facility Upgrade Project.

Purpose

The project involves the refurbishment and upgrade of the existing skate and BMX park and will include additional seating, shade and event infrastructure.

Council is working with specialised team including experienced skate park designers to produce the design.

Community engagement

The project will involve three phases of community engagement to allow users to share their ideas and provide input into the concept design. Phase 3 of the project is now open.

Phase 1

Council invited the public to provide feedback on how the skate and BMX park could be upgraded in May 2016. Users of the park were asked to share their ideas and provide input into the concept design. Feedback was sought via an online survey or by attending a workshop on 7 May 2016.

After the initial ideas were collected, the project team reviewed feedback and developed two draft concept design options.

Phase 2

In August 2016, council asked to hear your thoughts on two draft concept design options[8360KB] which were developed based on feedback provided in Phase 1 of the consultation.

Community members provided feedback via an online survey or by attending a workshop on 6 August 2016.

The project team reviewed all feedback and are currently developing a final concept design. A project update[341KB] was sent to participants in mid September.

Phase 3

The final concept design[548KB] and final concept design report[3499KB] is now available to view.

Where to from here

Council expects construction to start in April 2017.

Updates on the project will be made available on this webpage.

Background

The need for this upgrade has been driven by the degrading / aging asset as well as the current and future growth needs as identified in the Sunshine Coast Skate and BMX Plan 2011-2020.

The Alexandra Headland Skate and BMX Facility is classified as a Major District Facility.

The facility was built in c1995 with additions in c1998. The facility is the most well used, publicly recognised facility on the coast. The main activity area is approximately 940m2 and its high level of usage results in overcrowding. The facility comprises a half pipe, transitions, flat banks and some ledges. Maintenance issues include erosion and wear areas to the grass mounds; corrosion and rust to the existing lights and coping; insufficient drainage and limited seating and shade provision.
