“The Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards recognise and honour the achievements of citizens from our own backyard who have made an outstanding contribution to the region,” Cr Abbot said.

“There are many individuals in our community who work to make the Coast a better place and they deserve our thanks.

“These people are our local heroes and it’s important that we celebrate their contribution, both locally and to our great country.”

The awards will be presented in the following categories:

  • Community
  • Creative
  • Business
  • Environment
  • Sport and Recreation
  • Senior Citizen of the Year
  • Young Citizen of the Year

Nominations are open from 30 June to 31 December 2010. Forms can be downloaded from council’s website or picked up from customer service centres, libraries, Sunshine Coast University and TAFE.

The third annual Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards will take place on 25 January 2011 as part of a sunset ceremony held at The J in Noosa Junction. The event will include performances by local musicians and the presentation of awards by the Mayor.
