New approach to Brisbane Road Car Park redevelopment

I’m extremely happy with the outcome for the Brisbane Road car park site at the recent Ordinary Meeting.

Council has approved a split block option and will be dividing the site into two parcels.

This project has been 25 years in the making, but I’m confident we’re closer to achieving the best result for the community, businesses and council.

Our priority has always been to optimise what we could see delivered on this site in a way that achieved some of our important place making objectives for Mooloolaba.

There will be a call for tenders to design and construct a multi-deck 700 bay car park on the northern parcel of land facing Smith Street.

There is still a lot of work to be done, but it’s my hope that construction will commence by mid-2019.

During construction, council plans to maintain 100 car parks on the site, with a loss of only 75 car parks during the build.

Council will also call for Expressions of Interest for a variety of development proposals on the southern parcel of the property facing Brisbane Road.

This decision gives us the clarity to move forward and I believe this is what the community wants.

Work will now get underway to develop the design considerations and open tender process which is likely to be released to market in early 2019.

Council will at all times focus on achieving the best long-term outcome for our ratepayers.
