7000 trees planted for koalas
Sunshine Coast Council’s Doonan Creek Environmental Reserve was recently planted with 7000 new trees, funded by a $970,000 State Government offset payment. Thanks to the flora and fauna assessments carried out at as part of council’s environment levy reserve purchases, we know there are koalas on this Doonan Creek Environmental Reserve, making it an idea site to receive for this $970,000 offset.
Offset agreements attempt to compensate for the impact of unavoidable development – in this case, the Federally-funded Bruce Hwy project, connecting Frizzo Rd with Sippy Creek Rd at Palmview. I’m excited at the prospect of 7000 trees maturing over the next few years to create an enhanced koala habitat and a much needed east-west link to other nearby high-value environmental areas.
I attended the final round of the 2014 Australian Motocross Championships last weekend – it was a terrific event which brought hundreds of competitors and thousands of visitors to Coolum and the wider Sunshine Coast. I was really impressed with the speed and intensity of the racing – and it was great to see some of our local racers doing so well.
Meeting new residents
Last Saturday I had the pleasure of attending a constituent morning tea with Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson. This is an excellent initiative by Fiona, which allows all new constituents the opportunity to meet their state and local government representatives and discuss important issues. I find most people enjoy catching up with their government representatives and have a variety of views and issues to share with us.
Civic Centre update
Over the past week I have also been meeting with a number of community groups and business leaders to discuss the draft concept plans for the Coolum Civic Centre and Jack Morgan Park. So far the feedback has been extremely positive and council is looking forward to working with the community representatives to get the best outcome for these important community assets.
‘Meet and greet’
My next Coolum ‘meet and greet’ session is on Wednesday September 17 at 1-3pm. See you at the Coolum Library.
