A great year

It’s important to reflect on the successes of the year and one of the most rewarding has been working with a variety of community organisations including Descendants of the Australian South Sea Islanders Inc. (DASSI). The DASSI group’s milestones for this year include its 150th anniversary commemorations, securing a long term land tenure for ‘The Old Place’ and the creation of a new administration office at the old schoolmaster’s house in Bli Bli. I thank the group for inviting me to their end of year barbecue lunch and am looking forward to working with the DASSI people in 2016.

Congratulations also goes to Maroochy Waterwatch, a group that has done some excellent work in cleaning up our waterways and by keeping them safe by removing snags and other rubbish.  Hopefully, people are starting to get the message of the importance of keeping our waterways safe and clean.

Carols in Bli Bli

It was great to see such a terrific turn out at the Bli Bli community carols event, with residents, their families and kids all enjoying a really well organised event. The Bli Bli State School put on a wonderful Christmas show and the fireworks display was outstanding. Importantly, a substantial amount of much-need funds were raised for the school’s chaplaincy charity.

Explaining the airport expansion

It was a privilege to be invited to a Twin Waters Residents Association meeting to deliver a presentation on the Sunshine Coast Airport expansion project. Airport general manager Peter Pallot and I talked about the importance of the new runway to the Sunshine Coast’s economy, and its positive impact on jobs across all seven high-value sectors outlined in our Regional Economic Development Strategy. It was encouraging to get such a positive response from attendees and was particularly pleasing to hear the association had put in its own submission in support of the project. A sincere thanks to president Rob Ruskin and committee for organising the night and making us feel welcome.

 Christmas message

With the festive season fast approaching, my wife Jeanne and I would like to wish all readers a wonderful Christmas and New Year, with our very best wishes for 2016.
