Some very deserving community members were recognised at the 2018 Coolum Beach Australia Day Awards. I was pleased that this year the Coolum Beach Lions Club saw fit to add the Youth of the Year award into their list of awards.
Jye Parkinson, a year 10 student at Coolum State High School, received that award – he is the junior ambassador for Sea Life Mooloolaba for turtle conservation and an active community advocate for conservation and litter reduction. Joining him on the winners’ list are Linese Norrish as Citizen of the Year, Julia Loaney as Volunteer of the Year and Coolum Beach Community Kindergarten as Community Group of the year. I congratulate all of the winners and thank them for their contribution to the Coolum community.
Vandalism in Coolum
Recently there have been two instances of vandalism that have really disappointed me. There was the poisoning of 58 mature trees at Elizabeth Street Drainage Reserve, as well as significant graffiti at the newly upgraded Coolum Library. It is a shame that our community has to put up with such wanton destruction. I really hope the authorities catch the perpetrators.
Doonan Creek Environmental Reserve
Local residents and community groups are encouraged to share their views on a draft management plan for Doonan Creek Environmental Reserve. The plan will guide future community access and involvement on the reserve, and ongoing management and bush restoration over the next 10 years. I encourage people to go online to comment at haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/. You can also meet on site on February 27 at 4-6pm.
