‘Heroes Walk’ to honour fallen soldiers

I’m very proud Council is delivering this memorial to commemorate the sacrifice of our servicemen and women, which is slated for completion before Anzac Day. I would like to extend a big thank you to the Nambour RSL Sub-Branch which has contributed substantial funds, and a lot of time and effort to this project.

In only a short time, Sub-Branch Secretary Bill Sawrey OAM gathered photos for the glass wall from Adopt a Digger. There is talk of an additional wall in the future to include photos of other War Dead Diggers, which I will aim to fund. If you have photographs of any of the 139 Sunshine Coast soldiers (from the former Maroochy Shire area) who died in World War I and 79 who died in World War II, please send them to Nambour RSL Sub-Branch Secretary, PO Box 76, Nambour 4560.

Clean Up Australia Day

The nation’s biggest community-based environment event is just around the corner. Clean Up Australia Day is on Sunday March 1 and Council is calling on the community to register areas they’d like to clean up, fix and conserve.  This year marks the event’s 25th anniversary, and we’re lucky to have some long-standing community groups who clean-up year after year. One of those groups is Nambour’s very own Petrie Creek Catchment Care – thanks for all you do to keep our town and creek in good shape. Visit to sign up now.

Sports Star of the Year Awards

As patron of the Sunshine Coast Sports Federation, I recently attended the 2014 Sports Star of the Year Awards presentation dinner. I would like to congratulate Chairman Benny Pike, CEO Graeme Murphy, and the entire board on a wonderful event. Of course, a big congratulations also goes to all individual, club, sporting administration and coaching nominees – you’re all winners. My accolades go to archer Ryan Tyack who was the overall 2014 Sports Star of the Year. Well done Ryan, persistence does pay off MATE!
