Cr Thompson - Budget builds stronger community
  • Friday 27 June 2014

Council hands down its 2014/15 budget today and I’m looking forward to sharing the good news stories with you over the coming weeks.

It’s been an involved process balancing many priorities but this budget will build a stronger community as we strive to become Australia’s most sustainable region.

Garbage is big business

New look trucks, same reliable service - that’s what Sunshine Coast households and businesses can expect under council’s new waste collection contract.

Garbage collection may not sound very interesting but when you consider council has just signed its biggest ever waste contract worth more than $80 million over seven years, you get an  idea of just how big this business is.

Remondis Australia has been awarded the contract and will have 49 vehicles in its waste fleet, providing more than eight million collection services from Sunshine Coast households every year

As some collection days will change, every household in the region will receive a new waste management brochure and a new recycling collection day calendar. Keep an eye out for yours.

Fun run with a difference

The Swisse Color Run is coming back to the Sunshine Coast and 12,000 tickets are now on sale for the October 12 event.

This is an event for all fitness levels and all ages. It’s perfect for a family day out.

The event, dubbed the ‘Happiest 5k on the Planet’, will be staged at council’s Stockland Park and nearby Lake Kawana, and will be followed by a colourful ‘Finish Festival’.
