Join in NAIDOC Week celebrations
  • Tuesday 03 July 2018

To celebrate NAIDOC Week 2018 from July 8-15, Sunshine Coast Council invites the community to join a range of activities including the traditional flag raising ceremony in Nambour Council Chambers courtyard at 9am on Monday, July 9.

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The 2018 NAIDOC Week theme Because of her, we can! aims to honour and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and the role they have played, and continue to play, at all levels in the community.

Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan outlined council’s ongoing commitment to facilitate and support significant events such as NAIDOC Week.

“Council’s annual flag raising ceremony is a tradition that acknowledges and celebrates NAIDOC Week and I invite everybody in the community to join us at this free event which includes guest speakers and traditional performances,” Cr McKay said.

“Our gallery and libraries are joining in the NAIDOC Week celebrations by exhibiting a number of artworks from the Sunshine Coast Art Collection by local Indigenous artists at various libraries across the region.

“I encourage the community to get involved in the range of events planned throughout NAIDOC Week.”
