Mayor Jamieson - Coolum bushfires
  • Friday 03 February 2017

There will be many images I will remember from the recent vegetation fires near Coolum.

The hundreds of hectares of blackened bushland left behind are certainly an unusual sight for our region and distressing for many residents.

The encouraging news is the green shoots are already appearing and our bushland and farmland will bounce back in time.

It was remarkable to see flames come so close to so many houses and buildings without a loss of one single property.

That was the direct result of the outstanding skills and dedication of our emergency services personnel and hundreds of volunteers.

Those are the other images that will remain in my mind - those of outstanding men and women working in very trying conditions, with the benefit of great co-ordination between different services.

Thank-you to everyone who did such a fantastic job.

Organisations like the SES, rural fire brigades and surf clubs who are called on in difficult times like these can always do with more volunteers.

I encourage you to think about donating some of your time to help out and keep our community safe.
