Mayor Jamieson - Getting to work on our new airport
  • Thursday 26 April 2018

We have just experienced probably the most eagerly anticipated day so far in the history of the Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion project.

Last Friday, we turned the first sod to mark the start of construction our new runway that will help transform our economy and revolutionise transport to and from our region.

At 2450 metres long and 45 metres wide, Runway 13/31 will be capable of accommodating Airbus A330 and Boeing 787 aircraft.

That’s larger aircraft than ever before flying in and out of our airport.

We will have direct access to new markets in Asia, the western Pacific and other locations in Australia which cannot currently be serviced with direct flights.

Having this greater capability will unlock more tourism opportunities, new international trade prospects and will provide the springboard our export businesses need to get their products and services to markets faster and more efficiently.

My thanks go to the many members of our community who have supported this project on its long journey and best wishes to construction contractors John Holland Group and their team.
