Our Sunshine Coast community is blessed with some extraordinary citizens.
At last week's council meeting, we honoured one of the most extraordinary of all - Emeritus Professor Alan Mackay-Sim, the 2017 Australian of the Year, and a proud resident of Currimundi.
The key to the city was presented to Professor Mackay-Sim to recognise not only his Australian of the Year Award, but also what he has achieved throughout a distinguished career.
His pioneering research has helped provide a positive future for thousands of people with spinal cord injuries – in Australia and overseas.
Professor Mackay-Sim's work also shows our young Sunshine Coast residents the endless opportunities that are available by pursuing a career in health and medical research.
He is a strong advocate for research and is very impressed with what we now have available in our region thanks to the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital at Birtinya.
We thank Professor Mackay-Sim for his service to our community and wish him all the best as he continues to give hope to thousands of Australians with spinal cord injuries.
