Our Sunshine Coast Lightning have enjoyed another remarkable year.
They have quickly become one of Australian sport’s major success stories and we are honoured to be on the ride with them as they try to win back-to-back Suncorp Super Netball championships this weekend.
Let’s not forget that just over two years ago, the Lightning did not exist.
Thanks to Melbourne Storm, USC and Sunshine Council, we managed to secure a licence for our first elite team to compete in a national competition, taking on the capital cities.
A playing squad, staff and volunteer group were assembled, ambitious targets were set and have been surpassed.
Led by CEO Danielle Smith and coach Noeline Taurua, the Lightning have embraced the Sunshine Coast and we have embraced them.
The benefits are huge.
Here’s just two. We have young Sunshine Coast children who have wonderful new role models and the “Sunshine Coast” name is being promoted on national television, in the media and in front of live audiences each week.
Helping the Lightning along the way this year has been a devoted and noisy fan base which has produced a sequence of sellouts at USC Stadium.
We can look forward to an even larger stadium for home games next year, giving even more Lightning supporters the chance to come along and cheer on their team.
On behalf of our 303,000 residents, congratulations and best of luck to the Lightning this weekend.
