The Noosa Regional Gallery Travelling Scholarship 2011 is now open for business, with entries closing on 31 March.
Presented by the Sunshine Coast Council and principal partner, Friends Noosa Regional Gallery Inc, the national contemporary 3D art prize offers the winner a $12,000 grant, together with a solo exhibition.
The scholarship cash prize will enable the winner to undertake study or training overseas or in Australia. The grant is to be used through a recognised art institution, participation in short-term workshops or study with a nominated artist.
Community Policy and Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said travelling scholarships were a significant benefit to emerging artists, enabling them to pursue projects and work towards solo exhibitions.
"The Noosa Regional Gallery Travelling Scholarship will enable a gifted artist or designer to embark on an artistic journey, whether here in Australia or overseas, to develop their talent and enrich their career," she said.
"The winner will also have the opportunity of a solo exhibition at the Noosa Regional Gallery."
Forty finalists will be selected from entries submitted to a pre-selection panel. The finalist exhibition will be held at the Noosa Regional Gallery from 27 July to 11 September.
This year the award will be judged by Maura Reilly, curator of Global Feminisms and newly appointed Professor of Art Theory, Queensland College of Art.
Council’s Cultural Heritage and Collections Manager, John Waldron said the Travelling Scholarship was a valued part of the Sunshine Coast cultural calendar.
"For the region, the Travelling Scholarship’s finalist exhibition provides an opportunity to view a diverse mix of three-dimensional art created by talented leading and emerging Australian artists," he said.
"Now in its sixth year, the Scholarship exhibition always attracts many visitors to the area."
In addition to the substantial winner's award of $12,000 and a solo exhibition at the gallery, this year’s Travelling Scholarship offers a ‘Highly Commended’ and a ‘People's Choice’ prize.
Entries close on 31 March and a $25 entry fee applies. To apply online or for more details visit www.travellingscholarship.org.au.
