2000 trained food safety supervisors on the coast

All 2000 food businesses on the Sunshine Coast must have a qualified food safety supervisor in place by 1st July 2008, as required by The Food Act 2006.

Larger food shops with multiple shifts may need two or more food safety supervisors trained.

Service Delivery portfolio councillor Paul Tatton said the food industry on the Sunshine Coast is of a very high standard and safe food is vital for the reputation of our tourism industry.

"Some proprietors may not know that they must advise council of their food safety supervisor’s name and approved qualification in order to obtain their 2008/2009 food licence from council,” Cr Tatton said.

Food safety supervisors are required to complete specific training competencies with a registered training organisation.

Cr Tatton said there are a number of registered training organisations that operate on the coast, with most offering a convenient one day training program for under $200. Some organisations offer online training and others run more comprehensive two-day courses.

“If businesses have not yet done so, I encourage them book into a course and get qualified as soon a possible," Cr Tatton said.

Sunshine Coast food hygiene training providers are invited to inform council about their food training courses via email: health.tewantin@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. Council will advise food businesses of local training providers over the next month.
