The Australasian Atalanta Jamboree Ladies Badminton Championships will be officially opened by Mayor Mark Jamieson at Sunshine Coast Council’s Caloundra Indoor Stadium on 15 October 2012.

Mayor and Economic Development Portfolio holder Mark Jamieson said council was honoured to be hosting the Jamboree now in its 30th anniversary year.

"In 2009 our region had the privilege of hosting this event at the Noosa Leisure Centre," Mayor Jamieson said.

"This year the ladies will be making the trip to Caloundra Indoor Stadium and we look forward to extending them a warm welcome during their time on the Coast.

"The positive benefits of sporting events of this calibre are very important to our local economy as they attract good numbers of participants from outside our region.

"We will have 350 competitors participating in the week- long Championships, including nine clubs from New Zealand, who will also visit our beaches, restaurants and retail outlets."

The annual Championship event was originally created by a group of Victorian female badminton enthusiasts in 1982, including key organisers of this year’s event Val Nesbitt, Dallas Cooper and Betty McDonald.

The community is invited to attend the championships which run for six days, with preliminary rounds held each day from Monday 15 October to Friday 19 October, and the finals held on Saturday 20 October starting at 11.30am.
