A free bus in everyone’s stocking this Christmas

Forget filling up at the petrol pump this Christmas, from 26 December to 9 January all buses on the Sunshine Coast will be free in a move by Sunshine Coast Council to bust congestion, free up parking and encourage sustainable travel.

For the first time, the free service will apply to every single public bus route on the Sunshine Coast, including all TransLink Sunbus services, Hinterland Connect, Flexilink, Beerwah-Landsborough-Maleny—even the Council Cabs will be free.

Integrated Transport Portfolio Councillor Vivien Griffin said that the extension to the free holiday bus service is just one exciting initiative funded by the Public Transport Levy.

“What better way to encourage people to use public transport than by providing a service that beats the traffic, cuts down on parking hassles and is easy on the back pocket,” Cr Griffin said.

“Last year almost 85,000 jumped aboard the free buses and council is hoping for big numbers again this year, especially as 84 per cent indicated that they would continue to use the bus throughout the year.

“The initiative aims to take cars off our busiest roads by providing an easy alternative for residents and visitors heading to the beach, shops or many of the other popular destinations along the routes.

“The free holiday buses are just one element of council’s overall sustainable transport strategy, which delivers year-round transport improvements.”

From December, head to council’s website for timetables and dates.
