The Sunshine Coast Housing Affordability Taskforce welcomed last week’s release of the Maroochydore Centre Position Paper confirming it as another step forward to improving housing choice on the Coast.
The position paper, which will be used to inform future planning in the Maroochydore centre, will now be forwarded to the state government for sign off.
Council’s Social Strategy Portfolio holder and Housing Affordability Taskforce Chair, Cr Anna Grosskreutz, said that the release of the position paper is a positive step towards the delivery of improved housing choice in the heart of Maroochydore.
“What is exciting for Maroochydore is that the range of housing mix and products that challenge affordability issues are being encouraged by both the state government and council, in a location that offers great lifestyle choices, employment opportunities, public transport, leisure activities, shops, services, parkland and the beach,” Cr Grosskreutz said.
“The evolution of increased housing density opportunities, an exciting city centre and other vibrant living options will make Maroochydore a best practise model for integrating affordability and options for living.
“I’m now looking forward to the development of an affordable housing policy and local housing strategy for Maroochydore. This will enable developers to offer smaller households and singles a choice without compromising design and location—issues which often come with affordability.
“This is an exciting opportunity for Sunshine Coast residents to live work and play and to create a more sustainable lifestyle.”
Maroochydore was identified by the Queensland Government as a bring forward greenfield site and is a significant initiative in the Queensland Housing Affordability Strategy: Greenfield Land Supply Strategy—ensuring that suitable land is available in the urban footprint for development and is brought to market in a timely, cost effective and efficient manner.
The Housing Affordability Task Force’s main objective is to identify and develop approaches to improve council’s ability to offer affordable and appropriate housing to Sunshine Coast residents—both now and well into the future.
