Significant opportunities for improved affordable housing outcomes are contained in some of the key strategic planning documents recently completed by the Sunshine Coast Council.
At Wednesday’s meeting (22 July), senior managers from council’s Regional Strategy and Planning Department provided the Housing Affordability Taskforce members with a detailed briefing of future planning areas on the Coast.
Council’s Social Strategy Portfolio holder and Housing Affordability Taskforce Chair, Cr Anna Grosskreutz, said that the briefing provided further insight into the regions affordable housing options.
“The taskforce received an update of the ‘bring forward’ areas on the Coast that are capable of being developed in the short to medium term,” Cr Grosskreutz said.
“The Maroochydore, Palmview and Caloundra South position papers provide specific targets for affordable housing within each development.
“The taskforce will provide recommendations to council in August that will give an overview of the strategies required to reach these targets.
“The next challenge is for the taskforce to determine the detailed approach required to roll out the strategies and make the recommendations a reality.
“We’ll be reviewing the planning provisions, providing advice to council and the development industry, investigating sustainable approaches to design and working with other taskforces and reference groups to identify further energy reduction strategies and options.”
At the meeting, the taskforce also discussed with council the requirement for sequencing of infrastructure and development, and the need to consider innovative design solutions to balance the ongoing cost of living—both adding to affordable living outcomes.
“The taskforce reaffirmed to council the importance of ensuring the infrastructure—such as public transport services and communities facilities—is in place to support these new developments as people move in,” Cr Grosskreutz said.
“The taskforce also has a strong desire to understand further how homes can be sustainably designed to reduce the day-to-day living expenses and how people can be more efficient in energy and water use.
“The council managers offered their congratulations to the taskforce for placing housing affordability on the agenda and raising the profile of these issues within the region, particularly in this current climate when so many issues are competing for priority.”
