Sunshine Coast Council’s commitment to revitalise Nambour will be showcased during a fun-filled, free street festival on Saturday 5 December.

The celebration will mark the completion of a $5.5 million streetscape revitalisation project, which is part of the Hub of the Hinterland program, and includes an official ceremony at 2.30pm to open the new town square.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Bob Abbot said the revitalisation took a real partnership approach to town planning

“You can’t change anything without the support and backing of the community,” Cr Abbot said.

“Together, we’ve created a vibrant Chamber of Commerce and welcomed 30 new businesses into the town as well as forging strong social networks and relationships.

“The streetscape not only looks great but it has been designed to support Nambour’s social and economic development.

“The project represents the success of a partnership approach between the Nambour business community, its residents and the three levels of government.

“The official opening and the Nambour Alive celebration is a great way to mark our combined efforts.”

Division 10 councillor Paul Tatton said that the celebration marked the end of a long but rewarding journey.

“When the iconic sugar mill closed, Nambour lost some of its zest. We want to show people right across the region that the town is back,” Cr Tatton said.

“The town centre revitalisation model we chose for Nambour could be used in any town, anywhere in the world and the efforts are paying off.”

The Nambour streetscape revitalisation was funded by:

· A Queensland Government $1.81 million grant under its sustainable, liveable and prosperous communities program.

  • An Australian Government (Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government) $1.726 million grant.
  • Sunshine Coast Regional Council $2 million
  • Energex $250,000 to put the powerlines in Queen and Lowe Sts, underground

Project Background

Council’s Strategic Place Manager, Libby Ozinga, said that the Nambour revitalisation project had followed best practice town planning to the letter.

“We started by bringing together key players in the local area and created Nambour Futures Inc, a group that would look at all the ways the town could be improved and provide leadership in partnership with Council to drive the revitalisation process,” Ms Ozinga said.

“One key aim was to galvanize the Chamber of Commerce into overdrive mode, to provide support for existing business owners and set the platform for new business to thrive.

“Since 2008 Nambour has 30 new businesses some of which are destination businesses attracting customers from across the Coast.

“However, boosting the economy only goes part of the way to reviving a town. Social revitalisation was also paramount to Nambour’s success.

“Wins to date have been the introduction of the Friday Night Moonlight Markets, a revived Nambour Festival, Nambour Lights Up Christmas window competition, the introduction of a recycling shops directory and a proactive approach to working with new and existing businesses.

“But the latest achievement is of course the streetscape improvements. The hope is that with a more pedestrian friendly town centre, wider footpaths, art elements and shaded seating, that Nambour will be used in a different way.

“The moonlight markets will now move to the new town square location and the wider footpaths should create al-fresco dining possibilities that will add a new night time element to Nambour.

“And the Nambour ALIVE! festival on 5 December will be the town’s opportunity to present itself to the rest of the Coast.”
