Caloundra’s new art exhibition is one out of the box

Ask artists from Australia, Canada and Germany to produce a travelling art exhibition and you get something completely out of the box.

The result is “In Your Dreams”, a collection of artworks that literally fit into a box for ease of movement around the world.

So far, the exhibition has toured Canada and Germany before arriving on the Sunshine Coast as part of its Australian tour.

It opens at the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery on Wednesday 4 March, with the official opening planned for the following Friday (6/3/09) at 6.30pm.

Gallery director John Waldron said the artists were given a brief to produce new artwork that would fit into a small travelling box, either by sitting snugly inside or extending from it.

The finished product had to be something that could hang on a wall, sit on a plinth or suspend from the ceiling, he said.

“The artists have come up with a surprising and exciting body of work that doubles as an artistic exchange between ten Australian artists and ten each from Germany and Canada,” Mr Waldron said.

“There is something for all tastes in this exhibition, which includes works by sculptors, painters, printmakers, book and textile artists.”

The cross-cultural exhibition was curated by Brisbane artist Helen Sanderson and her overseas counterparts Karen Cornelius and Lene Rose Gruner.

It includes a local component by Sunshine Coast hinterland artist Corrie Wright showing artist’s books and mixed media works.

The exhibition runs from Wednesday 4 March until Sunday 12 April 2009.
