The ongoing diversification of the economy on the Sunshine Coast is slowly changing the outlook on job opportunities for young people.
And next Monday’s Sunshine Coast Youth Summit 2012 at Sunshine Coast TAFE will feature a series of workshops offering some advice to young people about the big changes coming and encouraging individuals to take ownership of the pathway to secure employment.
Sunshine Coast Council has embarked on a drive to develop industries including aviation, health and medical, education, professional services, digital economy, food and beverage and clean-tech here on the Coast, providing a wide range of career opportunities.
"Anthony Dow, council’s Industry Development Manager, will facilitate one of the workshops," Mayor and Economic Development Portfolio holder Mark Jamieson said.
"The workshop is titled ‘Maximising education and training to break into employment’.
"He will provide an update on where our economy is at and the career opportunities young people may want to consider," he said.
"I am looking forward to opening the summit on Monday as I am very passionate about work opportunities for the Coast’s young people.
"We are working hard to develop a sustainable economy – and our vision includes creating meaningful, quality careers for young people to study locally for, and ultimately take up, without having to leave the Coast."
Other agenda items include dealing with stress, body-image issues and self-esteem, and drugs/alcohol attitudes.
The 2012 Youth Summit takes place at 8.30am on Monday, at Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE.
