Community partnership delivers new facility for Coolum netballers

Hot sun and pouring rain are no longer an issue for netball spectators at the Coolum Sporting Complex following the installation of a new shade structure.

The new infrastructure was made possible thanks to grants from Sunshine Coast Council and Marcoola Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank as well as fundraising by the Coolum District Netball Association.

Division 9 Councillor Steve Robinson said by working together and forming partnerships there were many opportunities for community groups to secure assistance with funding.

“Council is keen to support a wide range of not-for-profit community groups through various grant programs, but we can’t do it alone,” Cr Robinson said.

“Following an on-site meeting with club president Judy Blackall, it was evident that the Coolum netball community needed financial assistance for this project.

“It’s great to see council, local business and the community working together to deliver this new shade sail which is much needed by the hundreds of netballers and spectators that visit the facility each week.”

Coolum District Netball Association President Judy Blackall said without the partnership between council, the Marcoola Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank and the netball club, the new shelter would not have been possible.

“The Coolum District Netball Association was established in 1987 and began with a simple garden shed and two grass courts,” Ms Blackall said.

“We now have over 540 members and operate competition and coaching programs right throughout the year.

“Our previous shade shelter was almost 20 years old and in urgent need of replacement.

“We knew funding such an expensive piece of infrastructure would not be possible on our own and the committee researched many avenues to find funding.

“After years of unsuccessful searching and application, I decided to approach Cr Robinson to discuss the issue and a partnership was born.

“We are grateful for Council and Bendigo Bank’s assistance with this project through their grants programs. Without each partner coming together we would have been facing many years of fund raising via sausage sizzles and raffles, it would have been a long hard road.”

Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the grants program provided assistance to a diverse range of community groups across the region.

“Providing funding assistance through our grants programs is just one way in which council can help reduce the pressure of fund raising efforts for local community groups,” Cr McKay said.

“If your not-for-profit community group needs assistance with funding I encourage you to apply for a community grant or contact one of council’s Grants Officers who are able to provide help and advice on exploring available funding opportunities.”

If your not-for-profit community group needs assistance funding a project, activity or event applications are currently open for Council’s Community Grant Program - Minor Grants (up to $2000). Applications will close at 5pm on Monday, November 16, 2015.
