Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson has congratulated the Jinibara People on the formal recognition of their native title rights following a Federal Court determination.

Mr Jamieson said the result is reward for the tenacity of the native title claim group over more than a decade.

"This has been a long process, the group has worked hard for this decision – and I congratulate everyone on their efforts," Mayor Jamieson said.

"Council looks forward to a continuing good relationship with the Jinibara People following this important day.

His Honour Justice Reeves of the Federal Court made the determination at a special sitting of the Court on country at Woodford today.

It’s acknowledgement by the Australian legal system of the Jinibara People’s traditional rights and interests to 3,500 square kilometres in Southeast Queensland.

The claim covers parcels of land within the Sunshine Coast, Moreton, Brisbane and Somerset local government areas.

The determination includes land in and around Maleny and over the Glasshouse Mountains National Park and Mapleton National Park.

The Jinibara People filed a claim over the land and waters North West of Brisbane in 1998.

Council was a respondent party to the claim and consented to a determination of native title which recognises the Jinibara People as the native title holders.
