Construction about to start on new beachfront park

Residents and visitors won’t have to wait long to reap the benefits of a new park in Mooloolaba that will open up previously private land on the Coastal strip for everyone to enjoy.

Construction of the Mooloolaba Town Park, which forms stage 1 of the Spit Futures Plan, starts in early October and will be completed just in time for the Christmas holidays.

The new park will link the beach to the Parkyn Parade wharf precinct and provide pedestrian access between the spit, the beach and the wharf.

Cr Chris Thompson said that to create the additional open space on the Mooloolaba beachfront, council is opening up the western end of the caravan park so that everyone can enjoy the space.

“The park will become a natural linkway between the beach and the Parkyn Parade wharf precinct,” Cr Thompson said.

“The beauty of this project is that as well as benefitting residents and local traders it will become a real draw card for tourists.

“Currently, if you’re standing on Parkyn Parade facing the beach, all you can see is the caravan park fence; on completion of this project, there will be beautiful shaded parklands that create a gateway to the Spit.”

Highlights of the development are:

the new toilet block and beach showers,
picnic facilities, shade shelters and seating
a wide pedestrian path
dune rehabilitation works
disability access
lifeguard storage facilities and
improved lighting

Two drivers behind the redevelopment are improved connectivity and safety, Cr Thompson said.

“The project will pay particular attention to crime prevention design to minimise the opportunities for anti-social behaviour.

“The development will give a boost to local businesses who can not only take advantage of the extra need for accommodation, but by improving the experience, tourists are likely to return.”

The construction period has been selected to fall in between the September/October holidays and the Christmas break to minimise disruption to visitors and traders.

The Mooloolaba Town Park is the first stage of the Mooloolaba Spit Foreshore development in line with the Mooloolaba Spit Futures Plan, endorsed by State Government in July 2009.
