Council will close its landfill and transfer station at Toolborough Road, Coolum at 5.00pm on 3 May 2010 as it is unable to accommodate any more waste.
The site, which takes just 10,000 tonnes of waste per year as opposed to 160,000 at Bli Bli, is council’s smallest active landfill, taking only small trailer loads of domestic and light commercial waste.
Wayne Schafer, Manager of Waste and Resources Management, is advising residents and businesses who currently deposit waste at the site to use the facilities at Cooney Road, Bli Bli or Eumundi Road, Doonan.
“Both are within a 15km radius of the Coolum landfill and operate seven days per week between 7.00am and 5.00pm.
“Maps detailing the locations of these waste management facilities are available from council’s customer service centre on 07 5475 7272 or 07 5475 8501.
“A free kerbside clean up for Coolum Beach residents will take place week commencing 14 June 2010 and a flyer detailing what items can be included in the collection will be distributed in letterboxes closer to the time.
“A full list of areas covered by the clean up and dates for collection can be obtained from council’s customer service centre.
“The closure of the Coolum site will have no impact on waste and recycling collections services in the local area.
“As to the future of the Coolum site, council is currently considering options for its future use,” Mr Schafer said.
Council apologises for any inconvenience caused to residents.
