Council buildings in the dark
  • Friday 27 March 2009

From Nambour to Noosaville and from Cooroora to Caloundra over eighty council buildings, offices and facilities will be in the dark for sixty minutes this Saturday night.

The region wide lights out* supports the international Earth Hour™ event for action on climate change and is part of council’s commitment to lowering greenhouse gas emissions on the Sunshine Coast.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Keryn Jones said climate change is the biggest threat facing the world today and the only solution is a groundswell of collective action by homeowners, business, industry and government.

“Our planet is warming and together we must change the way we use energy and move towards clean green alternatives,” Cr Jones said.

“Change begins at my house, at your house and across Council’s buildings, so lets demonstrate that we are prepared to do something about climate change.”

Cr Jones called on the Sunshine Coast to join council turning off non-essential lighting between 8.30 and 9.30pm this Saturday night.

“Millions of people around the world are expected to take part in Earth Hour this Saturday night.

“Let’s join them and at 8.30pm flick the switches off in an all out show of Sunshine Coast solidarity for action on climate change and better last year’s ten percent electricity reduction.”
