Sunshine Coast Council took out four awards at the Spinal Injuries Association’s third annual Inclusive Community Awards on 7 November 2012.
Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said council is very proud to be acknowledged for our contribution to the development of an inclusive community.
"Through Council’s Access and Inclusion Plan 2011-2016 we are committed to providing better access and inclusion opportunities that will benefit the whole Sunshine Coast community," Cr McKay said
"The aim of the plan is to identify ways to reduce social, physical and economic barriers to create a more inclusive community.
"After extensive community consultation one of the focus areas of the plan identified a need to improve access to council owned and managed facilities and open spaces.
"We are working towards creating accessible community facilities and open spaces that allow safe, independent, dignified and equitable use of spaces and places.
"We recently installed new pool hoists at Caloundra, Cotton Tree, Nambour and Noosa Aquatic Centres, which have been well received by the community.
"Better access for all people encourages community participation in social and physical activities and is a positive reflection on our diverse, caring and inclusive community.
"Improving access and inclusion in the region has important benefits for the whole community as it creates stronger social networks and enhances a sense of place and belonging."
Inclusive Community Champion Award winners included:
- Best Sporting Facility – Stockland Stadium
- Best Government Department – Sunshine Coast Council: Access and Inclusion Plan
- Best Recreation/Leisure/Entertainment Award – Sunshine Coast Council for upgrades to aquatic and leisure facilities
