Council launches inaugural Australia Day Awards program
  • Thursday 13 November 2008

Tomorrow at 10am, Mayor Bob Abbot will launch the inaugural Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards program at the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club in Noosaville.

Council will also support established local community awards by coordinating the joint promotion of community award programs and their winners on Australia Day.

The awards, which will celebrate and showcase our Sunshine Coast citizens, will be presented in a number of categories.

Nominations will be called during the period of 14 November – 10 December 2008.

Council will conduct a single major awards ceremony in January to celebrate our region’s heroes. The ceremony will complement the many awards programs that are organised by groups in their local communities.

Melissa Schembri, Sunshine Coast AIM Awards Young Manager of the Year, will be attending the launch as a member of the Australia Day Awards judging panel. Melissa will speak on the value of community award programs and the importance of recognising and celebrating local champions.

Also in attendance will be Ernie Benn and members of Rotary Club of Noosa Heads together with Mike Roach, President of Tewantin Noosa Lions Club, and members. Both clubs are supporting council’s Australia Day Awards ceremony as well as running their own “Local Legends” awards programs.
