Council responds to oil spill
  • Tuesday 10 July 2012

Sunshine Coast Council and Maritime Safety Queensland are assessing a large oil spill that was detected today at Wurtulla beach (beach access #247).

Council officers and Maritime Safety Queensland staff are on site at beach access 247 and cleanup efforts are underway on oil that has washed ashore.

Maritime Safety Queensland also has a boat offshore to further assess the spill and so far they have reported no further oil in the area.

At this stage the source of the spill remains unclear however it appears to be far less serious than the spill that occurred on the Sunshine Coast in 2009.

Wurtulla beach and nearby beaches remain open at this stage.
