l Robinson and Diana Reeves will be rewarded for their efforts in volunteering for the Sunshine Coast Council by attending a special Volunteers Race Day at Corbould Park on Sunday 16 May as part of National Volunteers Week.

After retiring from teaching, Jill and Diana have been volunteering at the Sunshine Coast Visitor Information Centre at Cotton Tree for 11 and 8 years respectively.

Both say they love their work, as it provides an opportunity to remain active, help others and meet like-minded people.

“I enjoy working at the visitor information centres and meeting lots of excited holidaymakers,” Jill said.

“I get personal satisfaction from helping people become enthused about all that the Sunshine Coast has to offer.”

Diana said local knowledge was a plus when advising visitors about the attractions of the region.

“Receiving excellent advice can make someone’s holiday much more memorable, and will encourage them to return to this wonderful part of the world,” Diana said.

In addition to assisting tourists, both women agree that the opportunity to develop new friendships has been another benefit of volunteering for council.

“Volunteering is an opportunity to meet like-minded people where the friendship goes beyond the few hours shared working together,” Jill said.

Jill and Diana are firm friends after working the same shift together for many months now and are looking forward to letting their hair down at the races to celebrate National Volunteers Week.

Mayor Bob Abbot will also attend the race day to offer his personal thanks to volunteers and acknowledge their invaluable contribution to the Sunshine Coast.

“We are extremely fortunate to have these people in our community and we all benefit from the many hours they devote to our region,” Cr Abbot said.

“They should be congratulated for their efforts and their commitment to making the Sunshine Coast a better place for residents and visitors alike.”

Council will also provide a free cuppa and mini muffins trackside to thank all volunteers attending race day, which has been organised by Volunteering Sunshine Coast.

The Volunteer Race Day is open to everyone and free tickets are available to volunteers and their families.
