Council welcomes the proposed end of trip facility initiative
  • Thursday 23 September 2010

Major new developments on the Sunshine Coast such as hospitals, shopping centres and large commercial office buildings may soon have to provide bike racks, lockers and showers for employees and the public.

The provisions have been put forward by the State Government as part of the proposed changes to the Queensland Development Code 4.1 - Sustainable Buildings.

Integrated Transport Portfolio councillor Vivien Griffin has welcomed the announcement form the Minister from Infrastructure and Planning saying that it will greatly assist the Coast’s transition towards more sustainable modes of transport.

“The new provisions, which are out for public comment until 15 October, will help to encourage more people to exercise, help to reduce vehicle numbers on Coast roads and cut the region’s carbon footprint,” Cr Griffin said.

“The proposed end of trip facility initiative from the state has a direct link to council’s Draft Active Transport Plan, which is also out now for public comment.

“The Draft Active Transport Strategy sets out a plan for walking and cycling on the Sunshine Coast, and integral to that plan is the provision of end of trip facilities.

“These facilities create an opportunity for employees and the public to walk, run or cycle to destinations where they can take a shower in a safe, secure environment before resuming their daily activities.

“People are much more likely to exercise and ride if they know at their destination there are freely available showers, secure bike racks and lockers.

“I congratulate the Minister on this initiative and look forward to it becoming a reality for our community.”

The Active Transport Plan is now on council’s website and open for comment as part of the next phase of Our Place Our Future community engagement program.

The community is invited to have its say on the Draft Active Transport Plan by sending council a detailed submission before 4.30pm, Friday 8 November 2010.
