The globally renowned REMIX Summit series will arrive on the Sunshine Coast for the first time on Monday, September 5 as part of Horizon Festival.

The Coast summit, called “Creative Cities – nurturing creative communities”, joins existing REMIX events held in London, Sydney, New York, Los Angeles and Dubai. The summit will be held at The Innovation Centre, University of the Sunshine Coast.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said hosting a REMIX Summit sat perfectly with the position council is seeking for the Sunshine Coast as one of Australia’s truly smart cities – the home of innovation, entrepreneurialism and creativity.

“REMIX explores the intersection of culture, technology and entrepreneurship – three key ingredients of the ecosystem that is alive and flourishing here on the Sunshine Coast,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“There is no better place in Australia to host this event and I look forward to welcoming our international and local speakers and summit delegates.”

REMIX Summits bring together thought leaders from across different industries to tackle the big ideas shaping the future of the creative industries and the creative economy.

This special Sunshine Coast summit has been developed to explore the ingredients needed to nurture creative cities and communities.

Sunshine Coast Creative Alliance President Phil Smith said creative excellence and great art was usually attributed to the talent and training of individuals.

“We tend to celebrate successful artists as ‘lone wolves’ and reward them for their gifts, but even a cursory study of history shows that great art and high culture is always a product of an engaged society and the creative culture of cities,” Mr Smith said.

"Without organised and productive urban places we will not get the powerful economic uplift that comes from a thriving, creative economy.”

International speakers will include Andrew Kalish, director of cultural development at Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, Hannah Barry, one of the UK’s leading creative innovators and Jonathan Robinson, co-founder and director of Impact Hubs.

The event also features a number of creative leaders changing the face of Australia.

Alan Crabbe, co-founder of Pozible, a crowd funding platform which enables great ideas to happen by empowering creators and connecting communities; Damian Borchok former CEO of Interbrand Australia and co-founder of For The People, who work with entrepreneurial leaders to envision, articulate and launch new businesses and also help remake existing organisations for the digital age; and Michelle Tabet, an urban strategist who is the co-curator of this year’s Australian Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale and founder of Left Bank.
