Draft Libraries Plan endorsed for community feedback

The draft Sunshine Coast Libraries Plan 2014-2024, which will shape the future of the Sunshine Coast Council’s library network, was today endorsed by Sunshine Coast Council for public exhibition and community feedback in the New Year.

Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the library network provides a highly valued service to the community and the Plan provides a high level map for its direction into the future.

“We would all agree that the modern day library is an important community hub that brings people of all ages, all backgrounds and all abilities together,” she said.

“The library service provides access to a diverse range of collections, services and activities that support intellectual, educational, creative and economic development within our community.

“In 2012 council surveyed our library members and almost 90% of the respondents expressed a high satisfaction with their current library experience.

“To ensure the continuation of this popular and responsive Sunshine Coast library service, the draft Sunshine Coast Libraries Plan sets the direction over the next decade.”

The Plan will go on public display from 20 January to 14 February 2014.

Cr McKay said that while council is cognisant of the many community benefits that can be realised from an improvement to the overall condition, operation and appeal of the library network and service, the draft Libraries Plan will help guide the prioritisation of these improvements to our much-loved libraries.

“We acknowledge that the library service must stay abreast of our community’s needs and trends to remain relevant and highly used. That is why it is important that the community has the opportunity to peruse the draft plan and have a say on the shape and the future form and function of the library network,” she said.

“We know that by investing in libraries, we are investing in our future”.
