Draft Master Plan for Caloundra Aerodrome released
  • Wednesday 17 October 2012

Sunshine Coast Council has today released the draft Caloundra Aerodrome Master Plan for community review and comment.

Members of the public now have 30 business days to review the draft and make submissions. Council will consider comments made before publishing the final document.

Council manages the 145-hectare site which was established as an aircraft landing ground in 1931. It has prepared the draft Master Plan as a blueprint for Caloundra Aerodrome’s development over the next 20 years.

The Master Plan covers matters including future design and growth, aircraft movements, services and support infrastructure, flight paths and noise, transport and access, cost and environmental management.

Economic Development (Aviation) portfolio councillor Steve Robinson said the plan was the culmination of significant planning and consultation with governments, tenants, local businesses and the community.

"The plan sets a clear direction on Caloundra Aerodrome’s development and future planning, something council, tenants and the community have been seeking for quite some time," he said.

"Caloundra Aerodrome is a key part of the Coast’s aviation infrastructure and it will play an important contribution to tourism, creating jobs and supporting regional economic development.

"Growing aviation is one of council’s economic development strategies and we need to ensure the Sunshine Coast has infrastructure that can support future growth."

The plan proposes to maintain the site for light aircraft operations only – such as helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. Businesses currently use the aerodrome for general aviation services, training, maintenance, and search and rescue operations.

"Caloundra Aerodrome is home to the famous Queensland Air Museum – the largest civil and military air museum in Australia, Air Force Cadets, training providers and important rescue services," Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said.

"It is council’s objective that the Master Plan provides local businesses and services with the opportunity to build on their operations as well as provide space for new entrants.

"This is an important document that provides certainty for the community on the aerodrome’s future; now the community has an opportunity to make their comments and I encourage all those interested to participate."

The draft Caloundra Aerodrome Master Plan can be viewed on Council's website, in person at council offices or libraries. Information displays will also be held at Stockland Caloundra supermarket on 27 October and 10 November (11am-3pm) and Markets on Bulcock Street on 4 November (10am-2pm).
