Banana sheaths, seaweed, wisteria and snakeskins could sound like the ingredients for a magic potion. They are in fact, part of a materials list for an environmental sculpture workshop with Mackay based artist Wanda Bennett.
The weekend workshop, Earthworks, is being presented by the Butter Factory Arts Centre in partnership with Flying Arts Inc, a key provider of arts workshops and exhibiting opportunities to remote and regional Queenslanders.
Wanda Bennett specialises in contemporary fibre weaving and wearable art, creating large sculptures, installations and processional puppets. With ten years experience, Wanda is also experienced in street performance and community projects combining visual art, drama, music and film. She has studied, exhibited and worked in Australia and Europe.
Bernice Childs, Manager of the Butter Factory Arts Centre in Cooroy, said that Earthworks is a hands-on workshop and the weekend program is structured for beginners as well as more experienced artists and craftspeople.
“Over the Earthworks weekend, students will look at contemporary styles of weaving, and explore a variety of different materials and techniques.”
