From an impressive number of entries, council today announced the 25 finalists vying for $8500 in prizes in the 2016 Sunshine Coast Environment Photography Awards.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said she was delighted to reveal the finalist images which are predominantly from largely local artists. They were chosen from the 665 images entered to showcase both the region’s unique environment and our relationship with it.

“We are absolutely thrilled with the huge response to this year’s awards – with 221 individual photographers entering – a substantial increase from last year’s inaugural Landscape and Wildlife Award,” Cr McKay said.

The selection panel had the difficult task of assessing the high quantity and quality of images to narrow the field down to frontrunners in three prize categories:

  • Human interaction with environment, $4000 first prize (supported by Living Smart) – 11 finalists
  • Nature based, $4000 first prize (supported by Environment Levy) – 12 finalists
  • Junior, $500 gift voucher (supported by Living Smart) – 3 finalists.

Cr McKay said the community had a not-to-be-missed opportunity to view the finalist entries in a unique outdoor exhibition from next month and appreciate both the beauty and environmental values of the Sunshine Coast that the talented artists have captured.

“The awards exhibition will form part of the first Horizon Sunshine Coast festival of arts and culture and will be exhibited at the Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens from September 2–11 before it begins touring to various other locations across the region,” she said.

“For a perfect way to celebrate Father’s Day on September 4, come and see this unique outdoor exhibition and enjoy the Spring Vibes in the Garden event, that features free music, entertainment, demonstrations and more for all the family.

“The winners will be selected by My Weekly Preview editor Richard O’Leary.”
