The Peace in the Trees sculptural installation of 12 sandstone monoliths which provides an invitation to the community to pause and reflect on peace and the natural environment in the Maleny hinterland has been officially opened.

Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay, who performed the opening duties, said the unique installation reflected so much of what the Sunshine Coast  hinterland is all about.

“These beautiful works that make-up the Peace in the Trees Sculptural Walk were created by community enterprise art4place and they encourage us to think a little more about our natural environment and particularly, the peacefulness it brings us”, Cr McKay said.

“The sculptural work was carved by 13 local artists and would not have come into being without the inspiration and support of internationally renowned local sculptor Craig Medson, who passed away in early 2015.

“Craig supported the community and fellow artists by arranging the delivery of 12 tonnes of Helidon sandstone, personally breaking it into workable monoliths, and inspiring and teaching artists to sculpt the stone.

“Maleny is known as an art tourist destination and currently has more than 10 community-placemaking art pieces that can be visited by tourists and locals as part of a walking tour of the town.

“I encourage the community to come out, take a stroll and soak in the peace and tranquility.”

The project has been supported by local artists, Sunshine Coast Council, art4place, Greenhills, Hinterland Business Centre, Maleny Retreat, Rotary of Maleny and EBIS Engineering.
