First Grants Program cheque presented

The first cheque for the second major round of the Sunshine Coast Council’s Grants Program funding will be presented to the president of the Palmwoods Western & Districts Junior Rugby League Club on Thursday 18 June.

Media are invited to attend a photo opportunity with Community Policy and Programs portfolio holder Councillor Jenny McKay, who will present the cheque to club president Alan Mewton and club players.

Mr Mewton says the funding will be used to help build a new clubhouse for the rugby club.

“Our club has grown from 50 to 200 members in the last few years alone,” Alan said.

“There’s no other facility in the area like the one we’re planning so it will play a big role in meeting the needs of the growing community.”

The Community Grants Program provides a range of grants to encourage, engage and support community groups and individuals to make positive and ongoing contributions to the region.

The second major round of the 2008/2009 Grants Program will provide $634,233 in funding for 86 community projects, events and activities across the Sunshine Coast.

Projects funded this year from council’s major grants are expected to generate up to $7 million in community benefit, with over 15,000 volunteer hours spent on the delivery of these projects.
