Free workshops to help Coast residents Start Cycling, Stay Cycling

A new round of free cycling workshops will be held across the Sunshine Coast from this weekend to encourage more residents to enjoy some fun and fitness on two wheels.

Sunshine Coast Council’s inaugural Start Cycling, Stay Cycling program earlier this year was an overwhelming success, encouraging a new wave of cyclists to hit our cyclepaths and streets.

This time, Council is catering for all cycling abilities, ranging from beginners who have never previously ridden a bike but want to join the cycling action to a workshop for road cyclists who want to improve their road-riding skills.

Run by accredited instructors, other workshops include helpful advice on basic bike maintenance and road safety and there’s a relaxing group pathway ride taking in some of the best views the Coast has on offer.

But to be part of a workshop, which have limited numbers to make sure riders get the most they can out of the session, you need to register now.

Transport portfolio councillor Rick Baberowski said Council encouraged cycling as an active mode of transport.

“We had such a great response to our initial Start Cycling, Stay Cycling workshops in February that we’ve decided to put more on from this weekend through to September for those who missed out or want to grow their riding skills, confidence and knowledge even further,” Cr Baberowski said.

“Cycling is a hugely popular pastime with many health benefits and is a rewarding, fun and cheap way to get from A to B.

“It’s great for your well-being and a daily 30-minute cycle trip can halve your chance of becoming diabetic. *

“Cycling helps to make our streets safer, has a very low carbon footprint and in a region as beautiful as the Sunshine Coast, it’s a great opportunity to enjoy our beautiful weather and some great views.

“I’d encourage the community to register early as these workshops are sure to once again be very popular.”

Participants are asked to bring their own bike.

Register on Council’s website at www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.
