Government partnership to boost rural sector

The region’s rural sector will benefit from a partnership agreement between council and state government.

The Sunshine Coast Regional Council will consider a recommendation for CEO John Knaggs to complete a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Department of Primary Industry and Fisheries at next week’s ordinary meeting.

The MOU will help develop profitable and sustainable primary industries across the Sunshine Coast.

Economic Development portfolio councillor Cr Lew Brennan said the agreement sets the cooperative basis for implementation of council’s Rural Futures Strategy.

“This agreement is about increasing the vitality and viability of the Sunshine Coast’s rural economic future,” Cr Brennan said.

“With 89% of the region defined as rural, it is essential that we work with all partners to ensure the sustainability of our rural sector.

An action plan will take the MOU forward, detailing the projects, responsible agency, funding and delivery timetables.

“By fully integrating programs, reducing duplication and reducing red tape in planning we can help our rural industries to become more innovative, entrepreneurial and self sustaining.”

The MOU and the Rural Futures Strategy are one aspect of council’s overall economic development strategies for the Sunshine Coast region. For further details about council’s economic development strategies visit www.business.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.
