A delegation from the Scottish Commonwealth Games Association will tour the Sunshine Coast next week to size up our suitability as a training base ahead of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Tourism, Sport and Major Events Portfolio Councillor Jason O’Pray said Scotland was one of several countries council was working to attract to our region in the lead-up to the event.

“The 18-person Scottish delegation that will arrive here early next week will include a number of their heads of sport and they’ll be inspecting local facilities at the University of the Sunshine Coast as well as Sunshine Coast Stadium,” Cr O’Pray said.

“Representatives from Scotland have visited us previously and were impressed with the quality of sports training facilities so we’re hopeful they’ll see our region as an ideal location to acclimatise and prepare for the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in April 2018.

“The opportunity to have world class international athletes basing themselves within our region is one that council is very keen to explore as part of the Sunshine Coast Regional Economic Development Strategy 2013-2033.

“It would present tremendous benefits for local businesses as well as providing more great exposure for the Sunshine Coast as a world class destination for tourism and sport.”
