Hinterland road to close for urgent repair work

The Sunshine Coast Council will close Tunnel Ridge Road, which runs between Mooloolah and Landsborough, for four weeks from June 30 in order to replace a failed drainage culvert system.

Division One Councillor Anna Grosskreutz said the decision to undertake the works received unanimous support at Council’s first ordinary meeting on April 23.

Council also agreed for the CEO to approach the Northern Pipeline Interconnector Alliance for compensation for the impact their heavy vehicles were having on local roads including Tunnel Ridge Road.

“A council inspection of the culvert earlier this year established that they had rusted through in parts and that had contributed to problems with the road,” Cr Grosskreutz said.

“It’s believed that the increase in heavy traffic related to the State’s pipeline project has also contributed to the problem.

“The bottom line is that our engineers identified the replacement of the culverts as a matter of urgency. Temporary repairs have been carried out and the safety of the road has been monitored on a regular basis while Council awaited delivery of the replacement pipes.”

Cr Grosskreutz said she had asked Council to investigate constructing a temporary bypass road, however that it was not possible due to the location of Council water infrastructure.

“I recognise that this road closure will be inconvenient, especially with rising fuel costs. However, I’m sure that residents appreciate that these works are necessary in order to ensure the road remains safe.”

“The workers are determined to work very hard to construct the new culverts in the shortest possible timeframe – and as many of these workmen are locals too, they share any inconvenience.”

Work on the four-week project is scheduled to start on June 30. Signage will be erected prior to the closure to give advance warning to motorists. Access to adjoining side roads will be via the Mooloolah end only as the excavation site is between Dularcha Drive and Kowald Road, near the Landsborough end.
