Time is running out for Sunshine Coast residents and businesses to nominate for council’s 2010 Living Smart Glossies Awards.
Submissions close at 5pm, Monday 7 June 2010.
Council’s Environment Portfolio holder Keryn Jones said that the Glossies Awards celebrate people who help to make the Sunshine Coast a more sustainable place live, work and play.
“The Glossies aim to not only recognise the eco-achievements of the applicants, but to also inspire others to make eco-friendly changes in their daily lives,” Cr Jones said.
“A great example of an inspiring entrant is last year’s winner of the Edible Landscape Award, Rosina Buckman.”
Since taking home the award last year, Rosina has had a very busy year sharing her tips for growing scrumptious veggies in the backyard with residents across the Coast. Her sell out workshop entitled ‘Creating Your Own Veggie Patch’ has drawn crowds hungry for their own veggie patch from across the Coast. And now she is sharing her tips for keeping chooks in the back yard.
Other winners from 2009 include the Sunshine Coast Cycling Alliance, who took out the Sustainable Transport Award for their constant work towards making the roads a safer place for cyclists and walkers.
Allan and Lenore McKay won the Excellence in Sustainable Design Award for their Golden Beach home. The home incorporates many sustainable building techniques including recycled material, natural heating and lighting, solar power and native plants to attract wildlife.
Cr Jones said that this year there are two new categories—the ecoBiz award and the Living Smart Solutions Award.
“The ecoBiz Award is for entrants who have developed a product, service or system to assist others to improve their sustainability.
“The Living Smart Solutions Award is for entrants who, through improving goods and services, have encouraged the uptake of sustainable behaviour by the community or businesses.”

The Living Smart “Glossies” Awards will be held on Saturday 26 June at the Events Centre, Caloundra, following the LivingSmart and EcoBiz expo.
